SEE the Jig Minnow Retrieves Everyone is Talking About
What is that spotted fish at 06:50 ??
Always thought it was snake oil (literally since the cheap stuff is oil based) but I might just give scents a shot.
I feel this is the difference between the swim jig and the chatter bait. I can let the swim jig sink and play it off the bottom. I'd fear the blade on a chatter bait getting hung up.
About 03:47 there's a Catfish amongst the Bass.
One hot summer I put on a dive mask and had a gander. In the thick brances of a fallen tree was a "shrimp city". And below it two large fish. My dad caught those fish on a spinner. My plug couldn't get deep enough.
hmm interesting stuff. I recall one day on the lake when I ran out of leader and just wound up fishing my green braided line. actually didn't do too bad lol.
Not sure why you don’t have 3 Million subs always great informative information keep up the great vids!
I love all of those area's Steve. I also like areas were a river channel swings up against a bluff wall. If you find the right depth, you can have a good day. I need to work on my off shore game. I'm still trying to figure that one out.
Something to think on why do gill nets work if fish are line shy?? Clear water line can be seen but do they care?? Still think depth and speed most important
Couldn't agree more with docks, moving water, and especially offshore weedbeds (my #1), however, IMO, gravel (which is pretty difficult to detect w or w/o sonar) is replaced with the deeper/deepest shorelines w/SHADE.
Please add a video showing how to slide a Bobber Stopper on a hook. I can't get it done.
Well presented, as usual!
Yes, it does.. but DO NOT USE OIL BASE SCENTS BECAUSE FISH CANNOT SMELL IT, since it does not desolves in water like water based scents.
WOW just wow. the minute ya said deer behavior and hills my mind went to how they stay on the slopes and don't skyline themselves... bass ledge behavior anyone...anyone...Buhler...anyone?.
Crazy pressure here, so that deeper first is great advice!!! Fact is I have always thought hat just fishing a spot well WAS disturbing it given how often the visual cover get hit hard and often. It's like the areas with few shore fishing spots. I call em death zones. Any fish that feed there and are unwary are toast. ...Gotta start going deep on the weekends here and try to find the routes of those circles around the death zones
This is some great content Steve! Thanks!
Save this one and refer to it regularly, it’s a good one. 👍🏴☠️
When fish are active and biting they'll hit a piece of clothes on a hook. What's most important is the location and the barometric pressure
As an outdoor fisherman in Hawai'i, I refuse to use any type of braided or non-deteriorating line. Many times I've gone fishing to only find other fishermen have gotten stuck on the rocks or coral, and KNOWING that this line will take MUCH LONGER to disintegrate threatens many of the native plants, sea life that they are stuck on. People just break them because they can't retrieve the line, causing others to get stuck in them also!
Here is the other side of that. If you are using braid you will lose much less line because you can use the same diameter line and it is 3 times as strong. Instead of losing line, I frequently bend hooks dislodging a snag that I would have otherwise lost if I had been fishing lighter line. Plus, I have never had a fish break off while using braid.
@PGAprodan I don't care about losing a fish, it's more important to me to save the Hawaii we came to love, not the trash that litters our ocean and kills our things in it. We have the most flora and fauna on the endangered species list, have already seen many go extinct, why do we want to add to that list?
Here in Australia, we don't have large or small mouth Bass. These tips are great for all fishing though.
Stop watching videos and go fishing. 😂
Thanks Steve, 👍👍👍
My pleasure!!
Try Dr Juice and procure. You can add these to a soft plastic and just throw out on heavy jig sitting on bottom no movement and you will get strikes
I will. Thank you!
And because camera works the same as eyes and fish eyes in particular. #sarcasm
Matt Stephon Swears about Berkeley’s power bait max scent Fish turn to look for it. Bite it. Haven’t tried or seen for myself tho yet.
Sunline makes a Fine float floating line.
...and another thing... It's great how you choose your words so carefully. When you decide to use different terms from standard bassin' jargon you use it as the lead in on why you choose to say it the way you do. You do it all the time to great affect. That is a big part of why you are so effective at resetting my brain. So not only am I getting and education in fishing but I am reorganizing my brain to a new communication mode in my work life. I am in sales but I need to believe in what I sell, I need to feel like I am a consultee seller who educates people to really make their own smart decisions. So like said below you really are a great communicator...and yeah, there is some fan boy shit goin on from here.
its hilarious how people think braid is somehow gonna not trick a bass to bite given all the weeds and even trash and line in the waters....were making them bite plastic ffs
Shell beds… muscles man. Especially on a hard clay Bottom. Like those gravel bars you like, only better. 😬
Shell beds are absolutely amazing. Thank you for adding this!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors lol. I was blessed to have been raised chasing giant smallies on Pickwick and Wilson lakes on the TN River. Probably spent too much time hunting for those jewels. 😂
You are one of the best, Steve
Thank you!
Fish don't smell for prey. It's tasting they are doing.
I find that using a deep running jerk bait at the end of submerged trees are my go-to spots. But I really look at the moon to decide what time is the best.
I too do the solunar shuffle... i will fish any time I can. But when I plan vacation trips or hire guides or charters for the stripers here It's always based on me being in the water so if the weather works in my favor so will tides and gravity. It's one of those things where folk wisdom really has been proven by science and record keeping.
I fish with Gulp Minnows religiously and here is my personal observation. Aggressive fish strike and go. Plastic, Gulp , spinners etc but unfortunately the aggressive bite is unreliable. Plastics have horrible texture. Baits like gulp minnows have a more realistic bait texture and infused attractant. Most fish generally don’t come back for plastics. Applying scent is inconsistent. I’m not going to reapply a scent every so many casts because it’s not necessary. The moral of the story is aggressive strikers attack on sight. The other 90% of fish bites willing to make 2nd or 3rd strike want both visual appeal and taste. Buy an artificial that doesn’t need scent applied. It’s really that simple.
I looked & almost all my blue line was zebco. Except for 1 spool. Bionic ice line.
Do bass hunt bait fish in the shallows on a full moon at night ?? Great time to be near the water.
That full moon definitely impacts night fishing. Friends of mine that have night fished a lot love being out at that time.
I fished at a boat ramp one evening I'm not sure what lunar cycle it was but close to dark, there where shad jumping at the wall and I even caught one that jumped onto the walkway. They were definitely getting chased hard by something. Went on for several minutes.
Great information.
Nice video. Thanks for not making this a drawn out 20 minute video
You’re welcome! I like to try and get to the point as fast as I can. Thank you for watching!
I do not recall if it was in the late 1970's or early 1980s when Tom Mann the GF of soft plastic worms said it best when he stated: "90% of luer colors catch far more fisherman than fish" or words to that effect For the first 40 years of fishing as an adult I went through fases of gotta have gotta try colors I have over a 100 assorted crankbaits in all kinds of different color schemes and honestly I ended up useing the colors that best mimic the actual pray fish 90% of the time to catch 90% of my fish The ONLY three exception to that was chartreuse and chartreuse and white and firetiger Other than that 90% of my fish get caught on hard and soft plastic baits whos colors closely resemble bluegill, shad, pearch, shiners or chubs I have several 40qt Rubbermaid storage totes full of exotic colored soft plastic worms I haven't used in years My go to colors for soft plastic worms is three different versions of Green pumpkin Three different versions of Watermelon Three different versions of black/blue metallic Redbug Junebug Soft plastic creatures and crayfish its Again same three different color versions of green pumpkin, Watermelon, New last year were two new colors for creature and crayfish I have absolutely no doubt working extremely well They were Okeechobee craw and Tilapia In soft plastic flukes and swimbaits again its the same three different color versions of Watermelon But White Ice/Sight Fish and Ghost Shad work astonishingly well Now as far as soft plastics go Im down to using only 9 different colors As far as hard baits its only colors that imitate baitfish or chartreuse and white or Firetiger I have no explanation for this but I fish three lakes near my home 90% of the time Discovered Chatterbaits four years ago Bought them in White and chartreuse metallic flake , black, greenpumpkin and Watermelon Black blue metallic flake After four years and 100s upon 100s of bass I only fish two colors anymore Black blue metallic flake with a Zoom fluke trailer in Avocado red in the spring from march till certain its peek pre spawn Then from pre spawn that point on white chartreuse metallic flake skirt with a 4" Keitech Easy shiner white Ice swim bait with the tail dipped in chartreuse dye and its belly and sides highlighted with an orange Spike-it marker I Tried multiple other makes and colors of chatterbaits with straight tailed trailers but a 1/4oz-3/8oz chartreuse and white chatterbait with a Keitech Easy Shiner trailer just flat out works so much better than any other chatterbait color I tried and believe me I wanted them to work as I have over $100 in chatterbaits I seldom if ever use It is my absolute belief bass absolutely ARE NOT color blind as many contend and I personally have to to to many times fished an area with one color hard or soft bait of a particular color and caught few to no fish put on the same exact luer and the ONLY difference is color and absolutely murdered the bass this has happened fishing crankbaits spinnerbaits chatterbaits and soft plastics One such example in the extreme was my friend and I fishing post spawn Kankakee river smallmouth at the dam in DT Kankakee we were fishing absolutely identical spin casting rods and reels exact same fishing line except he was fishing with a black and silver #9 sinking Reapala I was fishing a #9 black and gold sinking Rapala he was catching a smallie every 4th or 5th cast I couldn't BUY a bite We swithced setups FIRST cast I caught a smallmouth caught four more in 25 casts my friend caught nothing he understandably said time to swith back I had a #11 black and silver Rapala on me and yes caught a few smallies but nothing like my friend was waded back to shore went to my truck hot all three of my #9 black and silver sinking Rapalas and had a killer good day. Had nearly identical experiences fishing a black and yellow spinnerbait got nothing same spinnerbait in white chartreuse killed the bass same with using a greenpumpkin chatterbait got zip switched to a white chartreuse chatterbait again did great.
This is all great info! Thanks for sharing it.
3:02 little turtle curious about the camera
What pound braid you use ? And what know to leader you use ?
On my spinning gear I use 20lb hi-vis yellow. On my baitcast equipment most often it is 50lb green. Most of my leaders are in that 10-12lb range.
To any new watchers here. I'd encourage you to hit as many of Steves videos as you can. They all tie together after a while and really expand your brain as to how the underwater world works and how bass use it. Top notch Steve!
There's a sneaky spot that I know of where a submerged creek channel runs right near the bank. There's plenty of brush along the bank and the shade from the trees stretches out over the water. The bass always congregate around that area!
That is so awesome to find a spot that has all those elements coming into play. A special area that just produces time-and-time again.
Marvelous presentation
Thank you!
You water boarded a Senko
What about bream beds. I catch bass around them all summer long.
That is an excellent one. I totally should have put that in there. Thank you for adding it!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors Thanks for the reply. By the way I live in Hattiesburg, Ms. Which is in the south central part of the state.
There are VERY few RUclipsrs that cause me to stop and think,,,,Man I hope this guy is making a good living from this work. You don't spend a third of your video selling stuff. If you say something provocative, it sure seem to be in the name of learning and understanding and not just generating comments. You deal in fact and to the degree possible data. Its easy for a successful tournament angle to wax on about color or scent or underwater sound. You actually try and add to the collective knowledge. I'm sure it is hard and time consuming. It is greatly appreciated.
Thank you! It has been a fun but super challenging journey so far. But I just love talking about fishing and really enjoy talking with people from all over the world. Thank you for watching!

Man, I’m trying hard not sound like a “Fan Boy”, but I can’t praise you enough for the work you do and your presentation on videos. You communicate so well. Brief, concise, and to the point. Those are hallmarks of effective communication. You got it Steve. You are fast becoming “The Bass Professor of the 21st Century”, with all due respect to Doug Hannon. I love learning the bass behavior stuff. Thanks for all you do. 👍🏼
Thanks! That is a huge compliment. Doug taught so many of us so much.

I got beat up by the wind yesterday, but to your point I found it pushing water around an island and the fish were stacked up down wind, but they were all dunks. Still fun! Thanks Steve.
